Dialog:
Phone conversation with Billy Powel. Coach Chezem sharing memories, history, and life as an Indiana basketball coach.

Coach Chezem is entering his 2nd year as the varsity basketball coach at Loogootee High School. During his first year the Lions made vast improvements over their previous two seasons. Prior to Chezem’s arrival the Lions had back to back losing seasons (6-15 and 8-15) including first round losses in the sectional. The 2015-16 Lions used a late season surge, winning 9 of their last 11 games to finish the season with a record of 14-11. The 14 wins equalled the combined total of wins from the previous two years.

The basketball program experienced many changes in 2015-16. Players were very active in a comprehensive off season workout program, and the addition of a new weight room enabled the Lions to implement a year-round strength and conditioning program. With the help of his coaching staff, Coach Chezem started the Loogootee Basketball Club which provides out of season playing opportunities for basketball players in grades 2-8. He also started the Loogootee Wizards which is a 1st and 2nd grade ballhandling performance group.

Prior to moving to Loogootee Kent Chezem was the basketball coach at Covington High school for 11 seasons. His teams won 152 games, 6 WRC championships, 3 sectional championships, 4 Bi-County tournament championships, and have twice advanced to the “Elite 8” in the state tournament. On February 19, 2011 Coach Chezem recorded his 200th varsity win when the Trojans defeated South Vermillion 65-46.

Coach Chezem believes many of life’s most important lessons can be taught through athletics and specifically the game of basketball. He wants his student-athletes to learn to work hard in a positive, well-disciplined, team-oriented environment. His goal is for his players to leave the basketball program feeling good about what they have accomplished on the floor, but more importantly he wants them to feel confident that their basketball experience has prepared them to overcome the obstacles they will face in life.
